Questions and answers

Are quotes free?

Yes — every quote is 100% free and comes with no obligation to book.

Do you clean up the debris?

Yes, all arisings are removed as standard, unless you'd prefer to keep the logs or chip for yourself.

Do you handle Conservation Areas and Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)?

Yes — we run conservation area and TPO checks with your local council and submit applications on your behalf where needed.

What factors affect quote pricing?

Price depends on the size and condition of the tree, site accessibility, proximity to structures, and how much chipping and/or waste removal is involved.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes, subject to availability. We provide emergency tree work across North Somerset and the wider Bristol fringe — call us directly on 07955 740460 for urgent work.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based near Nailsea and cover Nailsea, Backwell, Clevedon, Portishead, Long Ashton, Yatton, Weston-super-Mare and the Bristol fringe. Just outside these areas? Get in touch — we cover most of North Somerset and the wider Bristol fringe on request.

Are you insured?

Yes. HGM Contracting is fully insured, with public liability insurance, and our whole crew is trained and covered on every job.

What does BS3998 mean?

BS3998 is the British Standard for tree work (Tree work — Recommendations). It sets out good practice for how pruning, felling and other tree work should be specified and carried out. We carry out our work to BS3998 standards.

Do I need permission to cut down or prune a tree?

Sometimes. Trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order, and trees in a conservation area, generally need the council's consent or advance written notice before work. Many garden trees aren't protected, but removing or damaging a protected tree without permission is an offence, so check first — we do this as part of every quote.

When is the best time of year to have tree work done?

Most tree work can be done all year, but timing matters. We avoid disturbing nesting birds (roughly March to August), some species prune better at particular times, and hedge cutting suits autumn and winter best. We'll advise at your site visit.

Do you remove stumps?

Yes — stump grinding to ground level, leaving the area ready to cover with soil or turf, or total removal including roots.

Can I send photos for a quote?

Yes — attach photos on the quote form or email them to enquiries@hgmcontracting.com. Photos help us give a more accurate quote, though we'll usually still offer a free site visit.

What are your opening hours?

Monday to Friday 7:30am – 6:00pm and Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm. Emergency call-outs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, subject to availability.
