Crown Reduction & Thinning in North Somerset

Crown reduction shortens the outer branches of a tree to reduce its height and spread while keeping its natural shape. Crown thinning removes a proportion of live branches to lighten the canopy and let more light and air through. HGM Contracting carries out both to BS3998 standards across North Somerset and the Bristol fringe, with a free written quote before any work starts.

Crown reduction or crown thinning: which do you need?

Crown reduction is about size. Branches are shortened back to suitable growth points so the tree becomes smaller but stays balanced and natural-looking, rather than being cut back to stubs.

Crown thinning is about density. Selected live branches are removed from within the canopy to reduce weight and wind resistance and to let light through, without changing the overall size or shape of the tree.

Many trees benefit from a mix of the two — for example light thinning to reduce wind load, plus a modest reduction away from a roof. We'll explain the options on site and recommend the smallest amount of work that achieves what you need.

Why people ask for it

  • Branches growing over roofs, conservatories, fences or neighbouring gardens
  • Loss of light to a house or garden
  • Dense canopies that catch the wind in storms
  • Rebalancing a tree after storm damage or the loss of a large limb
  • Keeping paths, driveways and access routes clear

What we won't do: topping

We don't 'top' trees. Topping — cutting main stems back to stumps — leaves large wounds that tend to rot, encourages weak, fast regrowth, and is not recommended by BS3998. If a tree is simply too big for its space, a properly specified reduction (or removal and replanting) is usually the better answer.

Permissions and timing

If your tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), or stands in a conservation area, you normally need the council's consent — or must give advance written notice — before pruning it. We check this before quoting and handle any application for you.

Nesting birds are protected by law, so for most trees we avoid heavy canopy work in the main nesting season (roughly March to August) unless it's safe to proceed.

FAQ

Crown Reduction & Thinning: common questions

What's the difference between crown reduction and pollarding?

Crown reduction keeps a tree's natural shape by shortening branches back to suitable growth points. Pollarding cuts the whole crown back to a framework of main limbs and is repeated on a regular cycle — it should only be started on suitable species, usually when the tree is young. We'll tell you which, if either, suits your tree.

How much can be taken off a tree?

There's no single figure — it depends on species, age, health and how much the tree has been pruned before. As a rule, less is more, because heavy cuts stress a tree. We agree the specification with you on site and put it in writing in your quote.

Will the tree grow back?

Yes — trees respond to pruning by growing. A well-done reduction buys you time before the tree needs revisiting, and we can advise on a sensible interval for your species.
