Tree Felling & Dismantling in North Somerset

Tree felling is the safe removal of a whole tree. Where there's room, a tree can be felled in one piece; where buildings, fences, roads or other trees are in the way, it's dismantled in controlled sections using climbing, rigging and — where needed — winching or a MEWP (mobile elevated work platform). HGM Contracting removes dead, dying, dangerous and unwanted trees across North Somerset and the Bristol fringe, to BS3998 standards.

Felling or sectional dismantling?

Straight felling means cutting the tree down in one piece and is only possible where there's clear space for it to fall. In most gardens and many roadside or farm settings there isn't, so trees are taken down in sections: a climber works from the top down, and each limb and length of trunk is lowered under control on ropes.

That's what keeps greenhouses, conservatories, fences, power and phone lines, and neighbouring properties safe — and it's why the right method matters as much as the cutting itself.

Trees we're often asked to remove

  • Dead, dying or diseased trees — including ash trees affected by ash dieback
  • Storm-damaged or leaning trees
  • Trees too close to buildings, drains or boundaries, or causing problems with neighbouring structures
  • Trees that have outgrown their space
  • Failed or split limbs and trees that have lost their structure

Equipment for difficult jobs

Every tree is different. As well as climbing and rigging, we winch over back-leaning trees under control, and bring in a MEWP when a tree is too unsafe to climb. Timber and brash are chipped or cut and carried away with our chipper, tractor-mounted timber crane and timber trailer.

Before we remove a tree

We check whether the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area — if so, consent or notice is needed first, and we handle that for you. We also check for nesting birds. For larger-scale removals, a Forestry Commission felling licence may be required; we'll tell you if yours is one.

If you'd like a replacement, we can plant a more suitable tree in a better position — see our tree planting service.

FAQ

Tree Felling & Dismantling: common questions

Do I need permission to cut down a tree?

Sometimes. Trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order, and trees in a conservation area, generally need the council's consent or advance written notice. Many garden trees aren't protected, but removing a protected tree without permission is an offence, so it's always worth checking first — we do this as part of every quote.

Can you take down a tree close to my house or my neighbour's?

Yes — that's exactly what sectional dismantling is for. The tree is taken down piece by piece and lowered under control, so nothing falls on your property or the neighbours'.

What happens to the wood?

All waste is removed as standard, leaving your site clean and tidy. If you'd like to keep the logs or woodchip, just tell us and we'll leave them with you.

Need a free, no-obligation quote?

Tell us about your trees or land and we'll come back with a clear, fixed written quote. Emergency call-outs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
