Grinding to ground level, or total removal?
For most lawns and gardens, grinding the stump down to ground level is all that's needed: the area can then be covered with soil and re-seeded or turfed. If you're planning to build, lay a patio or replant on the same spot, total removal — including the main roots — may be the better option. Tell us what you're planning and we'll recommend the right approach.
Why remove a stump?
- Stumps are a trip hazard and make mowing difficult
- They can resprout and send up unwanted suckers
- Rotting stumps can attract pests and fungal growth
- You may want the space for lawn, a patio, a new tree or a building
What happens to the chippings?
Grinding produces a pile of wood chippings. We can remove them with the rest of the waste, or leave some on site if you'd like to use them as mulch. If you plan to replant in the same spot, it's best to replace the chippings with fresh soil.
Before we start
Underground services such as cables, pipes and drains can run close to a stump, so it's important to know where they are before grinding — please tell us about any you know of. If the tree was protected by a TPO or in a conservation area, that's usually dealt with at the felling stage; we can advise on it as part of your quote.
